People 55 and older can stay fit and have fun with a new exercise program - BASE - offered through the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

What does BASE stand for?

Balance, agility, strength and endurance. That's what the exercise classes focus on.

What types of exercise do the participants do?

It's a low impact style of exercise. Some is sitting in the chairs, some is standing up, some is walking. We work on strength and some cardio. We work a little with weights and dumbbells and we also do a warm up and cool down.

How long are the classes and when are they held?

Our sessions are running about 45 minutes and we meet twice a week here at the All Cultures Equal building. There are five different locations for the classes held all around Webster City at different times of day. And sometime in September, I (Joan Hisler) will be starting one in Duncombe, too.

Who can take the classes?

Anyone 55 and older are welcome to attend. We have both men and women who take part. And they do as much as they can. If we need to accommodate certain moves, we can do that.

Everyone signs in and they do sign a waiver. We want to make sure they're healthy and don't have any problems while they're here. Two to three leaders work at each site.

How do people find a class that's right them?

Stop in the RSVP office and fill out a registration. As with other exercise programs, we suggest that people get the OK from their doctor. The participants wear a name tag and we like them to choose a home class, but they can attend any of the sessions. And it's an ongoing program and people can attend as long as they would like to continue.

Sessions are held at All Cultures Equal, Crestview Apartments, Fuller Hall, Southfield Apartments and the senior center. For more information or to find out about class times, call 832-2525
