Thank You

City Scene

September 9, 2016

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my thanks to all the folks who voted for me to represent the citizens of Webster City on the city council. The time on the council has been very interesting and has given me an opportunity to learn about the inner workings of city government, but there is a lot more to learn.

The City of Webster City has a very professional workforce. I have had grand tours of all our facilities and have met with and talked to a large number of employees. The depth of knowledge within the city departments is outstanding. I would encourage citizens of Webster City to take the tours when offered.

Boards and commissions: the volunteers who compose the boards and do the respective planning and recommendations should be appreciated for their efforts. This spring was my first chance to interview candidates for several openings. There were many incumbents and new candidates for the positions. I would encourage interested people to submit applications for future opening as they come open.

"Heads in Beds" at the local motels provide the money that goes into the Hotel, Motel fund (this quote was given to me by a past city council member). The grant application process takes place twice a year, in November and April. If you have an interest for your group and would like information call the City Manager's office for the specific information.

When I was running for council, this past year, several members of interested groups were under the impression they could receive a grant only one time when in reality they can apply as many times as they wish as long as they have a viable tourism plan. Each grant application will be reviewed by the members of the Hotel, Motel board and these meetings are open to the public. There is a limited amount of money available. I have encouraged many groups to put applications in to help fund their activities.

The new City Manager should start on October 31st 2016. Mr. Daniel Ortiz-Hernandez and his family will be a great asset to Webster City.

I want to thank the citizen groups who volunteered their time to conduct interviews with the candidates prior to the council interviewing. The selection process was interesting as they picked the same top three finalists as the council. Again thanks to all who helped.

I would like to thank Kent Harfst for his double duty and he did a great job as Interim City Manager.
