Shopping local

City Scene

As fall is upon us and we approach the upcoming holiday season, many of us will begin shopping for Christmas gifts for friends and loved ones. The shopping choices that we have today are abundant. From shopping online to shopping in stores, there is an unending number of choices for how and where we can make purchases. We can buy pretty much everything online if we choose to. Online retailers have made it easy to buy anything and everything we could need, without leaving the comfort of our homes. While it may be tempting to shop online instead of going to a local store, and I fully admit that I do some of my shopping this way as well, I want to encourage all of us to consider shopping local, not just for Christmas but year round.

Some of the benefits of shopping local:

Local jobs are created (seems like a no brainer - if

money is spent in the stores, it creates jobs)

You conserve your tax dollars- sales tax is reinvested

in the community

You create more choice- the more you shop locally, the more

likely businesses will carry a wider array of products

You help make your community a destination - The more

unique the shopping opportunities, the more we attract

visitors and guests

These are just a few of the reasons we should all make a point of shopping local whenever possible. Now I know that it is not always easy to find everything you need locally, but this gets even more difficult the more we go out of town or shop online. Stores are not going to carry products if the customers are not buying them. The last and one of the biggest (in my opinion) reasons to consider shopping locally is that the business owners and staff are likely your neighbors and your friends. By shopping local, you are supporting not only the community as a whole, but also the people who live in it. So the next time you are considering where to shop, I ask that you take all of these things into consideration when you make your choice!
